Significant Sig, Order of Constantine Sig and 44th Grand Consul of the Sigma Chi Fraternity, Floyd R. Baker, Nebraska 1937, entered the Chapter Eternal on August 15, 2003, in Englewood, Colo. During World War II, Baker served his country in the U.S. Army, retiring as a lieutenant colonel. Following his retirement from the Army, Baker entered the soft drink business in Denver. Following that foray, he moved into the engraving business, starting with Western Engraving Company and Western Balfour Company. Western Balfour Company was the distributor of L.G. Balfour products west of the Mississippi. L.G. Balfour Company was founded by 29th Grand Consul L.G. Balfour. Baker eventually became president of Baker Engraving Company.
Baker was initiated into the bonds of Sigma Chi at the University of Nebraska’s Alpha Epsilon Chapter in 1934; while there, he served as Recruitment Chairman, social chairman, Quaestor and Consul. He also served in many non-Sigma Chi capacities, including senior class president. Prior to his graduation from Nebraska he was named the Province’s most outstanding graduating senior.
Baker continued to show his dedication as an alumnus. He joined the Omaha Alumni Chapter and soon became its president. After moving to Denver, Baker joined the Denver Alumni Chapter and was elected president. He was one of the early developers of Leadership Training Workshop, served as a chapter advisor, Grand Praetor, Workshop facilitator, Grand Trustee, member and chairman of the Leadership Training Board, Grand Quaestor, Grand Pro Consul and Grand Consul.
While Grand Consul, Baker was able to visit each of the 148 undergraduate chapters and many of the 187 alumni chapters. He also initiated the Fraternity’s service relationship with the Wallace Village.
A true example of undergraduate leadership and selfless alumni service, Floyd R. Baker has left the Fraternity stronger than before it knew him. Baker provided these words at the 1968 Grand Council: “This is an undergraduate Fraternity. If we don’t keep these young men with us, where they respect us and trust us, we could have a lot of problems. Get to know them, understand what they are thinking.”
